This study aimed to identify the negligence as an act of violence against children and adolescents, a survey of cases reported to the National Notifiable Diseases System (SINAN) was conducted, in order to profile the characteristics of the victimization. This is an epidemiological study based on the retrospective analysis of cases of violence against children and adolescents (0-19 years) reported to SINAN in the State of São Paulo from 2009 to 2012. There were 6,158 recorded cases of negligence, corresponding to 17.2% of all notifications, most of them in children under 05 years. There were no significant differences among the victimization of boys and girls (p=0.107), although the absolute numbers point a larger number of cases amongst boys. There was a deficiency in filling notifications, because 83 cases found themselves without the gender information of the individuals. It has been concluded that, although some records were incomplete among the negligence cases, it was possible to identify that to the age group between 01 and 04 years old is more prone to suffer the mentioned type of violence. It is also noted that most cases are violations committed by their own mothers, characterizing domestic violence.
