Abstract

The study refers to issues involving the disposal of syringes and needles.  The purpose is to identify aspects related to the disposal of syringes and needles for insulin-dependent patients. A descriptive-exploratory research, qualitative, performed in an outpatient clinic of a private higher education institution in the city of Salvador-BA. Twenty-five individuals took part in the research.  The information was collected during the period from April to August 2012 by means of semi-structured interviews and interpreted using thematic content analysis.  The issues raised revealed the perception of the use of insulin, positive and negative aspects, handling and techniques for applying insulin, reutilization of material and disposal. A deficit of information was verified on aspects involving the final destination of the sharp edge materials. It is concluded that an educational process would permit better level of knowledge and promote awareness on the adequate disposal of sharp-edge materials.
