Breast cancer is a major public health problem, which increasing numbers of cases alerts the severity and extent of the problem and the need for effective public policies necessary for prevention and control. From estimates of the incidence and recommendations of the National Cancer Institute for prevention and control of breast cancer, we seek to provide an overview of that disease in Brazil. Based on these statistics, it is possible to understand its magnitude and how to cope it through appropriate public health policy, which must operate under the principles of integration and intersectional cooperation, and be efficient and able to reduce the numbers of the disease. It is concluded that the estimates and the recommendations, suggest the need for structuring public health services for prevention and control across the country.
