Descriptive study of surveillance conducted with data from the Mortality Information System, SIM. The study aimed at estimating the mortality coefficient for work accident, CM-AT, in the macro-Region of Southern Bahia in 2010. In the year 2010, in Bahia, out of the 189 deaths related to accidents at work 14.3% occurred in the macro-region of the Deep South. Roughly 93.0% of the workers who died were male between the age of 25 and 39 years and the transportation sector stood, with 18.5%. The CM-AT consisted of 8.5/100,000 workers. In 55.6% of death certificates (DO), the education levels of the workers was filled in as ignored, while in the occupation field, the certificate showed that approximately 56% of the fields had not been completed. These data indicate the need for qualitative improvement in record keeping, as well as in completeness of data related to the occupation and branch of economic activity. The emphasis on the importance of professionals’ awareness, who are involved in filling in the DO, remains crucial in order to create an increase in knowledge of epidemiological information from the official statistics. This increase will result in the improvement of actions for VISAT, in their different realities.
