Feelings, knowledge and practices among men as to the diagnosis of prostate cancer

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: to identify the feelings, knowledge and practices of men regarding the diagnosis of prostate cancer. METHOD: this is a descriptive and exploratory study with a qualitative approach, carried out with 14 men undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. For the organization of the chronological poles, the content analysis technique was used, according to Bardin's perspective, from which two categories emerged: feelings experienced by patients with prostate cancer and patient knowledge and practices regarding the diagnosis of prostate cancer. RESULTS: it was evidenced that the diagnosis of prostate cancer generates feelings of fright, sadness, disappointment with late treatment, confidence and at the same time mistrust regarding the prognosis, in addition to tranquility if accompanied by family and spiritual support. Little knowledge was demonstrated regarding diagnostic methods, which may have determined the least favorable health practices. CONCLUSION: the diagnosis of prostate cancer generated negative feelings and led to the search for support in the family and spirituality as a form of strategies for coping with the pathology. The issue still needs to be better publicized as to the forms of correct diagnosis among men. Therefore, it is suggested measures to make them aware of the necessary care with their health throughout life, as well as support for family members inserted in the context.
