Abstract

This study aims to analyze the incidence of septicemia as a cause of the mortality in children under one year old in an inland city from Bahia. Methodology: It is a retrospective descriptive study with a quantitative character conducted through the Mortality Information System - SIM, from 2010 to 2014. Results and Discussion: At the age of 1 to 48 hours (precocious), the septicemia stands out as one of the most prevalent causes (n=12), following only cardiovascular disorders (n=18). It is directly related to the gestational factors and/or the peripartum period. When evaluated in individuals ranging from 48 hours to one month old, the septicemia presented a very significant incidence (n=51), representing a rate of 36.7%, the most frequent cause in every year evaluated. Regarding the number of deaths in the age range of 1 month to 1 year old, the septicemia appears as the main cause (n=5). The high incidence of late-onset sepsis can be an indicator of a poor quality on service, not only in the ICU environment, but throughout the whole hospital environment, as it is primarily related to factors that are extrinsic to the individual, which are therefore mostly preventable or avoidable. Final thoughts: In light of this data, there is a need of discussing the practice of preventive measures against sepsis during the perinatal period, since it was found to be one of the main causes of death, contributing to infant mortality rates.
