Abstract

Introduction: The overactive bladder (OAB) syndrome is the second most common cause of urinary incontinence and has a considerable psychological impact on women, especially older women. This disorder affects the parasympathetic system and it can influence the bladder not emptying it properly. Physiotherapy presents numerous conservative interventions that helps to improve the patient's condition, such as a transcutaneous electrical tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS), which is less invasive, more accepted and free of adverse effects when compared to other treatment methods for OAB. This study aims to gathering the scientific evidence to identify the possible effects of TTNS in women with OAB. Materials and Methods: Systematic review including randomized controlled clinical trials found in the databases, LILACS, PubMed, PEDro, Cochrane and Bireme. Results: We found 421, of which 5 met the inclusion criteria. The variables of interest in the studies were: the presence or absence of urinary frequency symptoms, urinary urgency, nocturia and urinary incontinence associated with bladder hyperactivity and the improvement or not of these symptoms after treatment. Conclusion: This article showed that TTNS is a conservative instrument of physiotherapy that has no adverse effects, thus being well tolerated by patients and has demonstrated a good effect in the treatment of overactive bladder.
