Abstract

Introduction: Urinary incontinence was recognized as a worldwide silent epidemic and urinary symptoms during pregnancy are predictive of the occurrence of this condition in the immediate postpartum and long term. Objective: To verify the occurrence of urinary symptoms in the immediate postpartum period for primiparous women submitted to vaginal delivery. Methods: A cross sectional descriptive study conducted with primiparous women of age groups between 19 and 35 years, hospitalized in an obstetric nursing ward of a General Hospital, in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.  The data was collected through the application of structured forms prepared by the authors, and secondary data extracted from patient records, was also used the validated instrument ICIQ-SF. For data analysis the Epi Info® (v.3.5.2) was used, and to verify the existence of associations among the variables of the study the Fisher exact and the Chi-square tests, with the Yates correction and considering as statistically significant the p <0,05 associations. The project was approved by CEP-UNEB (044055/2016). Results: There were 22 women interviewed, average ages of 25.6 ± 5.3 years, 16 (72,7%) did not present IUU and 14 (66,7%) did not mention IUE. No relation was observed between urinary incontinence and the researched variables. Conclusion: The results presented suggest that there is a low or inexistent correlation of urinary symptoms in primiparous women submitted to vaginal delivery in the immediate postpartum period, nevertheless a follow-up is recommended for further investigation and monitoring of the urinary symptoms.
