Effect of the Pilates method in multiple sclerosis patients: a systematic review

INTRODUCTION: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a degenerative autoimmune disease with an unevenly distributed incidence worldwide. The Pilates method has great relevance in treating MS patients, increasing functional capacity and contributing to a significant improvement in quality of life. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the effect of Pilates in Multiple Sclerosis patients. METHODS: Systematic review of randomized controlled trials, reviewed by two independent reviewers, as recommended by the Prisma platform in the PubMed and Cochrane Library databases. Provision of original studies using the Pilates method, muscle strength, fatigue and balance in MS patients. The Cochane scale was used to analyze methodological quality and bias risk analysis. RESULTS: Five studies were included, published between 2014 and 2017. The Pilates Method intervened in the improvement of fatigue, balance and muscle strength, when compared to other groups where standard exercise and physical therapy were applied in MS patients. CONCLUSION: It is concluded that the Pilates Method is an effective option for the treatment of functionality in patients with Multiple Sclerosis.Downloads
