Introduction: Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) are among the leading causes of death in children under one year in Brazil and have often been associated with the social and environmental conditions, such as access to health care and the density of residents per household. The objective is to estimate the infant mortality rate due to ARI in Bahia in 2007 and identify its determinants. Methods: An ecological study was carried out using secondary data of the conditions of birth, and the environment, available at DATASUS, IBGE and IPEA, referring to the municipalities of Bahia which recorded deaths due to ARI, the SIM, in 2007. RESULTS: We included 100 municipalities of Bahia who had registration of deaths due to ARI, corresponding to the infant mortality rate (IMR) for ARI in the bay of 3.35 / 1,000 live births (LB). A multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that 25% of CMI is explained by garbage collection, normal gestational age and years of maternal education, although the municipalities present heterogeneous distribution of the WCC, ranging from 0.37 (Salvador) to 22 , 73 (Lamas) for NV 1000, and have different associated factors. Conclusion: The environmental, social and individual maternal and child mortality by influencing the IRA, but can be well controlled, since the interventions are specific and targeted at the local level.Downloads
