Extubation failure is linked to health and have impacts on the length of hospital stay and may lead to increased mortality. Thus, it is important to employ scientifically based criteria for extubation procedures and reinforce the need to abandon techniques based solely on experience. This study aimed to identify predictors of extubation failure in patients undergoing MV through a review of literature .It is a literature review conducted by searching the databases SciELO, Lilacs, Medline. For that purpose, studies that approached the extubation failure predictors were selected. There are predictors which indicate the possibility of extubation failure, but the sensitivity thereof depends on the population studied. Among the extubation failure predictors in this study are: epidemiological, neurological, ventilation predictors and the impact of extubation failure. In
this literature review, it was observed that extubation is inserted into the MV weaning process, which is complex and prone to failure because it depends on several clinical and physiological factors that may indicate the possibility of failure, but the effectiveness and applicability thereof depends on the population studied.
