Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To validate the content of an instrument designed to assess nurses' knowledge about Mechanical Ventilation. METHOD: Methodological, quantitative, validation study, conducted with the creation of a questionnaire, adaptation, and content validation by experts. The questionnaire validation was performed using the Content Validity Index (CVI) by intensive care experts (in the fields of nursing, medicine, and physiotherapy). The questions addressed ventilatory modes and settings, alarm adjustments, and protective ventilation. The CVI evaluated the proportion of experts in agreement (minimum of 80%) on a given question in the instrument. RESULTS: In the first round, 9 items received CVI=100%. Only question 9 received a low score from one of the experts, reaching CVI=80%, and was subsequently reformulated. After the reformulation of this item and the creation of two others based on experts' suggestions, the final version of the questionnaire was submitted to a new round of evaluation and achieved CVI of 100%. CONCLUSION: This instrument demonstrated linguistic equivalence and strong evidence of content validity in the Brazilian context, enabling an adequate assessment of practices related to mechanical ventilation. Verifying knowledge related to mechanical ventilation is linked to strengthening nurses' practice in their fields of work.
