Family welcoming in the intensive therapy unit

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To describe the importance of welcoming family members of patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit described in the publications. METHOD: It is a systematic review of a qualitative, descriptive, exploratory approach, conducted through a literature review in Scielo, Lilacs and BDENF. Data were analyzed using Bardin content analysis. RESULTS: Of the 16 studies found, 10 articles comprised the review analysis corpus, emerging three categories: the hospitalization of a loved one in an Intensive Care Unit; welcoming, involving and caring for the family in an Intensive Care Unit and the strategies for the applicability of the humanization of care in an Intensive Care Unit. CONCLUSION: It is extremely important to value the human relationships established between professionals, family members and patients permeated through welcoming. Nursing plays a fundamental role in building the role of family members, respecting their individualities and anxieties through interventions committed to comprehensive care, welcoming, listening, communication, bonding and accountability and thus achieving quality care.
